Zhang Weili returns to China after extended stay in US

UFC women’s strawweight champion Zhang Weili defended her title what feels like ages ago. At UFC 248 on March 7th – just over six weeks ago – Zhang defended her title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk in what would be the last UFC pay per view event before the UFC – along with all the other major sporting organizations in the United States – shuttered their doors as efforts continue to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interestingly enough, Zhang was in Las Vegas the whole time since, avoiding travel as the coronavirus was peaking in various countries across the world.

Zhang had some trouble getting to the US for UFC 248, as she was forced to leave China far in advance of the event due to the uncertain travel situation. The result was a fight which many believe is a shoo-in for “Fight of the Year” honors.

ESPN reports that Weili will begin her return journey on Sunday.
