Yoel Romero signed by Bellator, will fight at light heavyweight

Yoel Romero is a free agent no longer. On Tuesday it was announced by Romero’s management team that he has signed with Bellator and will debut in 2021 at light heavyweight. All 13 of Romero’s fights in the UFC were at middleweight, although he did begin his MMA career as a light heavyweight.

He will be fighting in a Bellator light heavyweight division which is arguably as good or better than its UFC counterpart, with the likes of Vadim Nemkov, Ryan Bader, and Corey Anderson, among others; all now potential opponents for Romero.

However, it is the potential matchup with Anthony “Rumble” Johnson – another former UFC light heavyweight contender who was recently signed by Bellator – which has captivated the masses.

The mercurial Romero, 43, is 1-4 in his last five bouts. However, it is a somewhat misleading 1-4, with all four of those losses being razor-thin decisions. “The Soldier of God” is sure to draw more eyes to Bellator’s talent-stacked lightweight division.
