UFC targetting Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz rematch, with BMF belt on the line

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the UFC is trying to book a rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, possibly for December or January. UFC president Dana White announced this after the conclusion of Dana White’s Contender Series 31 yesterday.

Masvidal and Diaz headlined UFC 244 last November. Masvidal won the fight via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) between the third and fourth rounds, earning the “BMF” belt; a one-off promotional belt devised by the UFC.

Since then, Masvidal competed for the UFC welterweight belt against Kamaru Usman at UFC 251. However, according to White, the BMF belt would still be on the line in a Masvidal vs. Diaz rematch. “[Masvidal] wants to defend [the BMF belt] against Diaz,” said White.

This is in contrast to White’s earlier insistence that the belt would be a one-time thing.

While its main event was fairly one-sided, UFC 244 was a PPV success (owing to the star power of Diaz and Masvidal), and even resulted in the delaying of a bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev.
