UFC Issue Statement On Jon Jones' Recent Arrest
The UFC have released a formal statement following the recent arrest of the promotional light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
For a while, it did appear as though Bones had managed to in some ways move past his notorious reputation as a troublesome superstar - and at this point, who knows how things will play out, but even still, the MMA world woke up to a familiar sight this morning.
Last seen inside the octagon in a razor-thin victory over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 last month - Jones had been finding a level of consistency in recent times that had alluded him during the last five or so years, fighting four times in the space of about 15 months, beating Alexander Gustafsson, Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos, and Reyes.
According to the police officers who found Jones in his car - the champ was sitting in the driver's seat with a half-full bottle of El Recuerdo Mezcal - the brand Jorge Masvidal has recently been endorsing, as well as what appeared to be trace amounts of marijuana on his shirt.
The official statements from the police officers at the scene - which can both be read in full here - described the discovery of the UFC champion in his car with 'an open bottle of alcohol on the floor behind the passenger seat. It was a 1⁄4 full bottle of Recuerdo, 40-percent alcohol - as well as a green, leafy substance on his shirt and pants, consistent with marijuana.
Now, the UFC have released a short statement on the latest instance of turbulence in the career of their one-time youngest ever champion, telling ESPN that they are still in the process of gathering information about the situation as a whole.
“UFC is aware of the situation regarding Jon Jones in Albuquerque early this morning. The organization has been in contact with Jones’ management team and is currently gathering additional information.”
As things stand, no comment has been made by Jon Jones or his team on the situation but one would have to imagine that there is nothing less than chaos occurring behind the scenes as the media circus surrounding the Albequerque native begins again.
The last offence that had been levelled towards Jones came as recently as July of 2019 - where Jon plead 'no contest' when charged with battery for an incident involving a waitress at an Albuquerque strip club.
As things stand, due to the COVID-19 crisis very little is known about the fighting future of Jones and when we should expect to see him in action next but judging from the public's response to this development, it does appear as though Jon will have his work cut out to convince the public of his dedication to the straight and narrow from here on out.
