Justin Gaethje Outraged By Khabib/McGregor Rematch Talk
Justin Gaethje has spoken out against UFC president Dana White as he hinted at another showdown between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.
From the sounds of things, White and McGregor seem to have different plans in mind for 2020.
And although Khabib Nurmagomedov stands to play a big part in each of their respective visions, it does appear as though Conor has his eyes set on the surging welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal first.
There are more than a few reasons as to why this may be the case but as far as the lightweight division and its fighters are concerned, the prospect of McGregor skipping the queue once again has become a cause for dispute.
Perhaps the most vocal of the lot is the in-form Justin Gaethje - who in the eyes of many - was snubbed by Team McGregor in favour of a matchup with Donald Cerrone.
Taking to his official Twitter, The Highlight took a moment to give his thoughts on Dana White's plan to match Conor up with the reigning champion Khabib Nurmagomedov if all goes well for him on January 18.
And as you would expect, he wasn't exactly thrilled by the prospect of being looked over.
Gaethje found differing levels of success in the UFC upon entering the promotion as an unbeaten champion in the now-defunct WSOF - defeating Michael Johnson before losing back-to-back showdowns against Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier.
All fights have been dubbed as classics but for many, his best work has been done when the contests are less competitive.
In the time since, he has made the necessary adjustments in order to redefine his style and against all odds, it has worked an absolute treat.
A trio of first-round KO victories over James Vick, Edson Barboza, and most recently, Donald Cerrone had seemingly solidified him as the next-in-line for a shot at the winner of April's clash between Khabib and Tony Ferguson.
However, with the injection of the famously disruptive Irishman into the mix, who knows how Gaethje's claim to that top-contender spot will look once all is said and done in January.
For now, I think it's fair to say that he is at least in some way justified in his outrage - although, it's not clear how much of a say he will have on the matter when push comes to shove.
Of course, a lot can change in a few months and with the lightweight division now containing some of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, the UFC will likely be looking to cash-in wherever possible.
As you would expect, this will probably make the already murky waters of the 155lb title-picture even less clear as the month goes on.
Whether that results in another potentially record-breaking showdown between Khabib and Conor McGregor is anyone's guess but for what it's worth, 2020 is going to be an incredible time at lightweight.
