Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier set to fight at UFC 257

After a rather rough round of negotiations, it is finally official: Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will have their long-awaited rematch.

McGregor, the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, will be fighting Poirier, the former interim lightweight champion, at UFC 257 in January, as reported by TheMacLife.

After losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in their lightweight title bout at UFC 242, Poirier has since defeated Dan Hooker in July at UFC on ESPN 12 via unanimous decision. He is 5-1 in his last six fights; the one loss coming against the undefeated Nurmagomedov.

McGregor, on the other hand, last fought in January, stopping Donald Cerrone in a mere 40 seconds at UFC 246.

While it was ages ago, and in a different weight category, the two men have fought before. At UFC 178 in 2014, the featherweight version of McGregor defeated Poirier via first round TKO.

UFC president Dana White has insisted that this fight will not be for the title but rather will determine the No. 1 contender at lightweight. While Khabib announced his retirement last month at UFC 254 after defending his belt against Justin Gaethje, his title has not yet been vacated and he remains in the USADA testing pool.

UFC 257’s location and venue have yet to be announced.
