Cody Garbrandt expects title shot with win at UFC Fight Night 188
Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is set to fight Rob Font in the main event of UFC Fight Night 188 this coming Saturday. And while Garbrandt is 1-2 since losing his belt to TJ Dillashaw at UFC 217 over three years ago, he feels that a win over Font should put him in the conversation for both the flyweight and bantamweight titles.
“I’m looking at being a two-time weight division champion,” Garbrandt said at the UFC Fight Night 188 media day. “I feel like this fight right here is a title eliminator.”
While this fight will be at 135lbs, Garbrandt believes that a win should put him right in the thick of both the flyweight and bantamweight title pictures. He is perhaps not wrong in this assumption, as he was scheduled to fight flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo last November at UFC 255 before being sidelined with complications from COVID-19.
Although Garbrandt struggled through the recovery process for months, he says he is now at 100 percent health and ready to compete. Garbrandt's last fight was his memorable knockout victory over Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250 last June. Font is on a three fight win streak himself, with his last fight having been a TKO victory over Marlon Moraes at UFC Fight Night 183 last December.
