Alexander Volkov seeks title shot after dominant victory over Alistair Overeem
While Francis Ngannou will be challenging Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight belt at UFC 260 on March 27th, the heavyweight division does not appear to have one clear contender to Miocic after Ngannou.
Alexander Volkov definitely made his case last Saturday at UFC Fight Night 184, with a dominant victory over Alistair Overeem. While Overeem is 40 years old, he went into last Saturday’s fight on an impressive run, having won four of his last five fights; his sole loss being a controversial stoppage against Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
And yet, from the opening bell, it was Volkov who imposed his will on the “Demolition Man,” piercing through his high guard and overwhelming him with volume striking.
Volkov is on quite the impressive run, himself. He is 7-2 since signing with the UFC, with one of those losses being at the hands of Derrick Lewis in a last second Hail Mary knockout that he otherwise would have won.
“I want to fight for the belt, for sure,” Volkov said post-fight. “But we’ll see.” There are some other heavyweight matchups to look out for, including Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis on February 20th. But Volkov is quickly establishing himself as a top title contender in the heavyweight division.
