MMA community reacts to the death of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov – accomplished coach and father of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov – passed away on Friday from complications from COVID-19.

He was widely respected in the MMA world, and thus, the MMA community responded with an outpouring of emotions and condolences for the Nurmagomedov family.

Khabib’s teammate Daniel Cormier said: “Your father leaves such a tremendous legacy behind … Rest in peace, Abdulmanap. One day we will all meet again.”

Former light heavyweight knockout artist Anthony “Rumble” Johnson posted on Instagram: “The same bond [Khabib] had with his dad, I also had with my grandfather who adopted me, so I understand what you're going through brother. Stay strong; we're with you.”

UFC women’s strawweight champion Zhang Weili posted “Rest in peace,” along with a clip of her greeting Khabib and Abdulmanap at a UFC media event.

Former UFC featherweight king Jose Aldo posted, “My deepest condolences go to the Nurmagomedov family during this time!”

The legendary Georges St. Pierre posted to Twitter: “My most sincere condolences to you and your family.”

UFC bantamweight title challenger Petr Yan posted: “A worthy coach and patriot of his people!”

UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevshenko offered her condolences, as well:

Longtime rival Tony Ferguson posted his heartfelt condolences, adding that “[Abdulmanap] will be front row when we hopefully compete some day.”

Many more fighters and MMA media personalities expressed condolences to the Nurmagomedov family. The MMA world has been deeply shaken by the loss of a uniquely accomplished and respected coach.
